Just before the first national Covid-19 lockdown was announced, a team of Scouts and their leaders travelled down to Dartmoor for a weekend of hiking and wild camping with our Devon Scouting friends. Travelling by train, tube, train and then minibus all the way down to South Brent near Dartmoor, The March ‘March’ is always a huge adventure for the Scouts and leaders alike.
Having arrived late on the Friday night and sleeping at the local village hall, the girls and boys set off on the Saturday morning to walk in mixed groups from different drop off points to explore Dartmoor on trails suited to their age and ability. With rucksacks loaded with sleeping bags, spare clothing and kit for the weekend they hiked and navigated their way across Dartmoor under the expert leadership of the qualified mountain leaders and Scout volunteers. After a long day’s hiking they arrived at their wild camping site beside a stream. There they set up camp and cook their own suppers on stoves brought in by some of the Devon leaders.
All 70+ Scouts and their leaders packed up their tents on the Sunday morning after cooking their own breakfasts on stoves and then hiked back to the South Brent Scouts’ HQ. Once they had all changed, everyone was treated to a massive four-course Sunday Roast with all the trimmings before our Scouts started the long trip back to Hertfordshire by train.
A fantastic adventure for everyone and a fantastic opportunity to meet other Scouts from around the country and make friends.
